In recent months, Gresham has faced several incidents involving gun violence, prompting local authorities to enhance their efforts in ensuring community safety. Notably, on April 23, 2026, deputies from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office seized multiple firearms and suspected drugs during a proactive patrol near Davis Park, close to Davis Elementary School. Four individuals under the age of 21 were found in possession of three firearms, ammunition, and various substances believed to be fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges the community faces regarding illegal firearms and drug activities.
In response to such events, the Gresham Police Department has been actively investigating reports of gunfire. For instance, on January 26, 2026, officers responded to two separate incidents of gunfire in the city. These investigations are part of a broader strategy to address and reduce gun-related incidents in the area.
Central to Gresham’s approach is the Ceasefire initiative, a collaborative effort involving law enforcement, community organizations, and public health partners. This program aims to reduce gun violence through targeted intervention and prevention strategies. Captain Don Livingston, leading the Ceasefire program’s bi-weekly shooting review meetings, emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “Our officers respond, our officers and detectives follow-up, and our partners work to interrupt violence before someone is hurt.”
Community members are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local authorities. By fostering a collaborative environment between residents and law enforcement, Gresham aims to create a safer and more secure community for all.
